"S'yloa's back with candidates," Carona said. She sat outside her weyr, repairing her riding straps. Her green, Surperith was curled up in her couch. "That's his second trip, too."
"Huh," R'dan, her fraternal twin grunted. He leaned against his bronze, Voraidith, who sat on Carona's weyr ledge. Neither seemed interested.
"Oh! Klissi has come out of her weyr. She's greeting the youngsters. They're surrounding her like some hatchlings that just found a piece of meat."
"Hmm," was R'dan's only response.
"F'rendil's just arrived too. Looks like he's brought some guests," she said, continuing her narration of the goings on in the Weyr bowl. "Ki'van is going to meet him."
"Ugh," R'dan groaned. "Don't tell me he's been abducting girls again. I guess I'll have to avoid Kajono for a while."
"You were already avoiding that hold," Carona countered. "After that holder caught you with his *engaged* daughter…"
"Oh yeah." R'dan smiled to himself.
After a moment's silence, Carona spoke again. "Raine is oiling Imolith."
That got R'dan's attention. He stood up and moved to get a better view. At the same time, Voraidith turned his head to look in the same direction. He stared for a moment. "She looks radiant," he said.
"And way out of your league."
"What are you talking about?! Bronzes were made for golds!" R'dan turned to stare at his sister, aghast. "Besides, what woman wouldn't want a piece of this?" He ran a hand over his wavy black hair. Voraidith rumbled in agreement, and held his head up.
"Any sane one," Carona replied drily.
"Hmph, you're just jealous." He turned back to look at the new arrivals, ignoring his sister's snort of derision. "Imolith looks young. It might be her first flight. We should be able to catch her, no problem." He patted Voraideth confidently.
"Yeah, cause you're soooo good at catching golds." Carona said, sarcasm dripping from her voice as she tested a strap, snapping it tight to check its strength. "You do realize the implications of her flight, right?"
"What do you mean?" Both dragon and rider looked at Carona.
"If Klissi doesn't accept the promotion to senior Weyrwoman, then Raine and Imolith will be next in line. Her flight," she turned to look at R'dan, "Could decide the next Weyrleader."
R'dan considered this for a moment, then a wide smile grew on his face.
"No R'dan, don't even think it--" she started when saw his expression.
"I think I'd make a great Weyrleader," he said, ignoring her. The more he thought about it, the more he liked the idea. "Ki'van and Baizynth are old. Literally! The leadership could use some fresh blood."
"It also means work," Carona pointed out. "You won't have time to galavanting around, or hanging out at the local tavern. You'll be held to a higher standard. And you might even have to take Raine as your weyrmate. Golds and their riders don't tend to like to share. The Weyr expects solidarity in their leadership."
R'dan continued to stare at the gold pair, his smile falling down into a frown as she spoke. "But they will have to respect me," he countered. "I can finally command the respect I deserve. Especially from Father." His tone grew harder at the thought of Lord Herron. He had only seen disappointment in his father's eyes the last he saw him before he transferred to Great Cliffs. It wasn't his fault that the fool died. And he didn't see the big deal anyway. The man was scum. The world was better off now, with one less thief.
"If you have to command it, it isn't respect," Carona pointed out. "And Father has always tried to do what's best, not just for you, but all of us." It was R'dan's turn to snort with derision. 'This conversation is moot anyway. Voraidith would have catch Imolith first, and regardless of what you think about Ki'van, he's not going to give up the Weyrleadersip so easily."
"Oh, don't you worry about that," R'dan replied. "Once I show Raine some of the old R'dan charm, she'll want me to win." He started to smile again. Yes, he could definitely see himself with the new rider. If only her taste in music was a little more…refined, he thought as her voice drifted over.
