No New Posts Candidate Barracks

The Candidate Barracks are split up into male and female dorms.

The long dorm rooms are separated into small booths for the individual Candidate, and these are separated by a curtain. Each Candidate is provided with their own cot bed, chest of drawers and area to hang some clothes.

All the barracks have their own washrooms situated at the end of the room and the corridor leads straight to the main hall where the Candidate lessons or held.

There is also access to the Kitchens and Dining room.

No New Posts Crèche / Weyrbrat caverns

The youngest members of the Weyr are usually looked after in the crèche by their nanny. There are many small caves and passage ways that run under the Weyr that most weyrbrats spend much of their time exploring and the occasional 'illegal' party hosted by Candidates or Weyrlings take place.

The Kitchens are accessible from these caverns.

No New Posts Dining Room

For those early risers and late-night prowlers a pot of klah at soup can usually be found here on the side table.

This spacious hall is large enough for the many feasts and parties held at White Sands Weyr as well as the occasional mass meeting. The room is designed with several large long tables set into a ‘U’ shape. The head table is usually reserved for the Weyrleaders and their mates.

Among the fine tapestries in the room, there is a certain one. It hangs on the wall behind the Weyrleaders' table, and is made in the image of the founders of Weyr: Detri of gold Mericath and Sh'iren of Bronze Anderynth. This is the oldest piece of artwork in the Weyr, dating back to the seventh Pass!

The Kitchens are accessible from this room.

No New Posts Harpers' Hall

This Hall was carved out during the first Turns of the Weyr's existence. Although it was originally intended to be a hall for Harpers it fell into disuse and then a landslide blocked the entrance. Turns passed, the Hall was eventually forgotten.

It wasn't until the Great Storm that it was rediscovered when part of the Weyrbowl's wall slid down. While the Miners were repairing the wall they also found the entrance to this place.

Now the cavernous chamber serves at the Harper Hall, and the passages leading off it explored in hopes of finding one that ultimately connects to the rest of the Lower Caverns.

For now it is not connected to any of them, the only way to reach anything else is by going out into the Weyrbowl.

The back end of the main chamber is much smaller than the front end, creating a natural way to enhance the sound. There are two smaller chambers off the main one and a short passage with several rooms. Their shape suggests they were meant the residences of non-dragonrider Harpers.

No New Posts Healers' Caverns

Since the Great Storm this once small series of rooms has been expanded. Their ceilings are reinforced with the finest of trunks imported from the thick forest of Connell Isle.

The main cavern has a great arching ceiling and a newly installed fire place. The fireplace's chimney was cut out from a small natural fissure formed either from water dripping down through the Turns or a minor earth-shake. It connects with the Kitchen's and uses the same chimney to exit the Weyr.

Now the Healers' caverns consist of a series of eight rooms. There are two store rooms and one large still room.

The two used as wards have been widened and can accommodate a large number of patients if required, most often used after Threadfall when casualty numbers are often quite high. There are multiple beds lined against either wall. Each infirmary can easily hold twenty 'residents' comfortably; although in a pinch up to thirty extra can be scattered throughout the other rooms without causing space troubles.

With the new addition the dragonhealers' have a space of their own, an entire room created for the sole purpose of check-ups and a fire-lizard infirmary.

There are some large caverns leading to the outside, reserved for injured dragons that need special attention. There is a new cavern that has been added intended for Whers. No sunlight reaches this cavern, making it very comfortable and safe-feeling to the light-sensitive Whers.

No New Posts Kitchens

The kitchens consist of several rooms, including a large room is often used for breakfasts, quick snacks and less formal meals than the dining room. Filled with several large tables, the far wall houses four different hearths and fire pits for cooking.

A hungry ‘rider or Weyrfolk is always guarantied to find something here, a pot of warm Klah warming over the fire and some hot stew are always available.

There is a back room where most of the pot cleaning and preparation takes place.

The Dining Hall and storage caverns can be accessed from here.

No New Posts Starsmiths' Hall

With its clear view of the sky unobstructed by anything and the brilliance of the stars here, White Sands is a ideal place for anyone wishing to study to become a Starcrafter (Starsmith), especially as during the summer months the Southern Lights are visible from the Observatory. This Hall has been set up for the use of this craft.

No New Posts Weyrfolk rooms

These passages are wider than the other passages in the Lower Caverns and more extensive. They burrow into the mountain and curve all the way around the Weyr from within. Unlike the storage room passages or the rooms used for general work, these corridors have been designed around natural shafts in the extinct volcano that allow light in. These light shafts have been enhanced in a variety of ways, including adding mirrors to better reflect the light and rain-proofing them. There are glow baskets for additional lighting during the night.

On either side of the corridors are the rooms the Weyrfolk live in. From the Headwoman and the Groundcrew Lead all the way down to the cooks each one has a set of rooms - two each. There is one large room for the drudges to share.

Some of the rooms have private bathing areas, but most of them have a common area. The common bathing area although inside is in direct alignment with the Weyrlakes and shares the always-warm water.

Board Information & Statistics

Board Description
Lower Caverns
Within the Lower Caverns are the Candidate Barracks, Crèche, Dining Hall, Harpers' Hall, Healers' Caverns, Kitchens, Starcraft Hall, and Weyrfolk rooms.

Technically the Lower Caverns are part of the Weyrbowl; however, they are noted separately because of their importance within the Weyr.

Here is the heart and soul of the Weyr, the place where those who are not dragonriders keep the Weyr running. These are the caverns and passages that are always a hub of activity no matter what time of day or night. These are the caverns that face the ground entrance to the Weyr.

The Lower Caverns are accessible from the Weyrbowl. Most of them are interlocking as well, with corridors separating them. Since the Great Storm each of the cavern entrance has been equipped with a small lip that will in theory diminish the chance of them being flooded again.

Despite the fact that most of the caverns are interlocking, the Candidate Barracks can only be accessed through the Weyrbowl. Scattered throughout the various corridors and winding passages within the Lower Caverns are the residences of the Weyrfolk.
