When it comes to other people, she pretends to act annoyed by them. If you ever ask her, she'll say the children around the Hold are annoyances and that the adults are even more irritable but you can tell she has an underlying affection for both.
However sassy Nyoka can get, she prefers to let others be the leader and will only take the reins if there is no other option. This is one of her more fatal flaws as even if someone is doing something wrong, she won't speak out unless she is absolutely sure she can win, which is most of the time, or a person of authority gives her permission and there is someone else to blame if it goes wrong.
History: Nyoka grew up in a single-parent household. Rosara, her mother gave birth to twins - Nyoka and her twin brother Rogue - after a tryst with a man whose name she didn't even know. Her mother believed him to be a dragonrider. Rogue was Nyoka's sole consolation. They would work together, play together, and even sleep in the same bed when they were younger and innocent. However, their mother separated them into different beds when they reached the age of seven.
At the age of thirteen, Rogue died from a fever. Her mother completely lost it. She went mad, and instead of finding comfort in her last remaining family member, she relied on drink to ease her loss and pain. Nyoka grew bitter toward her. Finally one night, they had a fight. Rosara screamed at Nyoka for all kinds of hurtful things. Nyoka screamed right back. The fight lasted for almost an hour until Nyoka stormed out of the house. She spent the night with a friend When she returned in the morning, contrite and ready to apologize, she found her mother dead via suicide. She'd eaten the poison bait they had to keep tunnelsnakes at bay.
Nyoka was shell-shocked at her mother's rash decision and that she was now completely alone. Her friend helped her pick up the pieces. She began tending to the household alone save for her feline, Nikola.
Nyoka ran errands to earn money, and one day, she came upon a Healer who was overseeing an emergency where a man had accidentally sliced his own arm off. The man's wife was crying nearby, but Nyoka watched silently. She watched the Healer make a concoction of herbs, and she watched them bind the man's stump of an arm. This began her interest in Healing. She asked the Healer if she could become his apprentice. She already knew a lot about herbs due to not being able to afford a healer's care. The Healer was impressed and kept a tab on her for the next few months. Eventually, when he knew enough about her to know her worth, he started to take her along on medical trips and she was his assistant. He paid her per day and the sum was more than a month full of errands could every get. Over time, he asked her to be his official apprentice. Nyoka was so excited, but she was insecure. What if she wasn't good enough and compromised the life of a patient?
While she was considering this, Nyoka happened upon a hatching clutch of fire-lizards and fed a green one. Nyoka decided that she could accept the Healer's offer and become his apprentice.

Personality: Nikola is clever as Nyoka only picks cunning companions. She is a superb hunter and sometimes can seem like she has been metasynthed. She is adept at catching tunnel-snakes and other household pests. When it comes to other animals, she can be quite fierce, especially toward dogs.
